Winterton and beyond

Just a few ideas on what to do & where to go around Winterton

It’s easy to hang out and relax for a few days in Winterton and go nowhere!! Some ideas below if you do want to venture out.

Local – walkable or within half an hour drive.

Walk straight from the chalet!! Lots of ideas for walks in the folder!!

Explore the dunes and beach. Go and see the church ruins at East Somerton etc.

Visit ‘The Time and Tide Museum’ in Great Yarmouth about herring fishing. Excellent!! Well worth a visit. Cafe opposite (Silver darlings) or try Cafe 1903 which is great.

Turn right and walk along the dunes ( 20 minutes) to Hemsby- for fairground rides, amusement arcades etc.

Go and see the seals at Horsey!! It really is a special setting. (Park at The Nelson Head pub (free) or at Horsey Gap (free only if NT member). Or it takes 3-4 hours to walk there and back. From late October to early March there are hundreds of grey seals with their pups on the beach – an amazing sight.

Ross’ boat trips on Horsey mere are great fun if you like spotting birds and wildlife!!

A little further afield half an hour drive +.

Check out the map above the armchair. Pick somewhere on the broads to explore. Most places are within half an hour drive!! Info on ideas of where to go in folder.

Visit Ranworth broad or Coltishall ( both half an hour drive). Highly recommended by locals.

Hire an electric boat for the day on the broads. (Richardsons in Wroxham come highly recommended.

Boats can be hired at Martham boatyard too. (Just 3 miles away).

Visit How Hill and go on a ride on the Electric Eel boat and explore the Marshman’s house.

Bewilderwood (adventure park for children up to 12). Half an hour drive.

It’s a 45 minute drive to Norwich. It’s a great city to explore!!

Visit Winbirri or Chet Valley Vineyards. 30/40 mins drive!!

It’s a 45 minute drive to either Sheringham or Cromer. Great for a day out.

Take the steam train from Sheringham to Holt. It’s worth getting off half way at Weybourne just to see the station. It’s just wonderful with a little cafe, a second hand book shop and a re creation of a WW2 allotment complete with an Anderson Shelter. The Ship Inn in the village does terrific food as does the cafe ‘Ali’s of Weybourne’.
